I read some Roth
I love those “author anthologies” with the red and white stripes on them.  I recently borrowed the “Zuckerman Bound” version featuring Philip Roth’s Zuckerman trilogy.  Nathan Zuckerman is the most thinly veiled portrayal of an author in a book that I’ve ever read- and all the novels, The Ghostwriter, Zuckerman Bound, The Anatomy Lesson, and the epilogue, The...

I read non-fiction
I just read the Purity Myth by Jessica Valenti.  The tagline on the cover is one of the few taglines I have ever seen that honestly depicts the contents of a book.  Valenti, a blogger at feministing.com uses the colloquial style associated with blogging prose- and her down to earth, accessible style of contextualizing what she has termed “the purity myth” is relevant, interesting and...

I just read
Today I finished The Collected Stories of Amy Hempel.  I really liked Hempel’s style of writing, and my only complaint about this work is that it was short stories- not a novel.  I feel as though Hempel could have written a really awesome protagonist for a novel.  Some of the stories were REALLY short, like a page long and I usually wanted more from the quick snapshot.  The stories were...

I finally read...
In college and kind of throughout my life I’ve focused on Eastern European, Russian and Jewish writers.  Throughout my classes and personal reading choices, this book, Ferdydurke by Witold Gombrowicz, has been mentioned as a classic example of writing from “the Other Europe” and hailed as an unknown masterpiece.  The author is a Polish nobleman whose work has been compared to...

On the train I read...
When I read this book on the train, this man kept talking to me and asking what it was about.  I finally replied “religion and secularism in American government” but that was kind of a lie, because I didn’t want to get “into it” with a strange dude on the train who might get mad and preachy about the fact that I was reading atheistic propaganda.  But this book is...

Books I read the past two weeks...
This past week has been a reading frenzy, since I just got my Brooklyn Public Library card. I read: Ragtime, by EL Doctorow.  I loved this book, and I like other books I’ve read by Doctrow.  I thought the way he entangled historic events with fiction was really fun to read, and certain characters like Emma Goldman were actually new to me.   Notes from the Underground, by Fyodor Dostoevsky...

MISSION STATEMENT, SORT OF.
I wish that I had a running archive of all the books I’ve read.  I figure there’s still time to document my real life reading list, since I’m only 23 and I hopefully have a few good years of reading left in me.  Please contact booksijustread@gmail.com if you have a book you just read that you’d like to remember that you’ve read.
