FREE BOOK
Nagles and I just scored free trash books off the Bergen G stop.  I got Michael Chabon’s The Yiddish Policeman’s Union and she got one that had a really simple nice cover.  SCORE! I love finding free books!  They’re like a present from the universe.  Once, I stopped at a book stand on the street and inquired as to the price of a certain tome, and was told more than I had.  I...

TOP TEN POLYAMOROUS BOOKS: →
I’d like to add David Markson’s Going Down, which I do not recommend reading whilst on public transportation.  Ditto his novel, Springer’s Progress.  I haven’t read ANY of the books described in the top ten list, but I’m definitely going to reserve Hemmingway’s Garden of Eden.  I love smartly written erotic fiction.

FART PARTY
THIS COMIC MY BOYFRIEND SHOWED ME TODAY BLEW MY MIND. It was like looking at pictures and reading words that came out of my own brain, but out of someone else’s brain.  I love and feel strange when things like this happen, but mostly love.  Julia Wertz, author of FART PARTY, moved to Brooklyn, NY the same month as I did, lives in the same neighborhood, played Narnia as a child, loves...

THE WHITE ALBUM, THE BOOK
I finished Joan Didion’s The White Album last night.  This collection of essays, though separated by chapters, seemed so fluid as to make me understand the author.  I definitely knew she was curious, determined, disciplined.  I began to admire her around the fifth chapter.  Or maybe I had been secretly admiring all those qualities and then all of a sudden it hit me- she tried really hard,...

I RE-FINISHED PRIDE AND PREJUDICE!
One of my favorite books of all time is Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.  I read it for the first time in high school as summer reading when I was abroad.  I was lost without English language books at my beck and call, and Austen’s words were such a comfort I read them twice in as many weeks.  Since that summer, I’ve read Pride and Prejudice many more times; each time I find...

A BOOK ABOUT BOOKS
Well, a book about making books.  I just read Indie Publishing: How to Design and Produce Your Own Book, which my boyfriend bought for me.  I found it useful and informative- as well as well made and artsy looking.  The colors, layouts and creativity of the book served as an example for readers… There were sections about DIY bindings, selling your book, editing, print it yourself services...

David Foster Wallace.
I am a huge David Foster Wallace fan.  I should probably get that right out there. I read Brief Interviews With Hideous Men.  It was an experimental collection of short stories, many times reaching out directly to the reader.  Wallace used an unconventional method of one-sided interviews to engage the reader- we can imagine what the questions are and we can pretend we’re asking them.  The...

The Mole People
My book club book, that I didn’t read in time, was The Mole People: Life in the Tunnels Beaneath New York City, by Jennifer Toth.  I finished it last night, after scarily reading it on the train for about half an hour.  Mistake.  Living in New York City brought more gravitas to a grave situation- on the train I kept thinking about the stories I’d read, the electrocutions, the violence...
