This past week has been a reading frenzy, since I just got my Brooklyn Public Library card. I read:
Ragtime, by EL Doctorow. I loved this book, and I like other books I’ve read by Doctrow. I thought the way he entangled historic events with fiction was really fun to read, and certain characters like Emma Goldman were actually new to me.
Notes from the Underground, by Fyodor Dostoevsky and it reminded me of like every boy I had a crush on in high school.
The Good Life, Jay McInerney, whose name is practically unpronounceable. Also, one of the worst books I’ve read in a long time since it’s premise, a love story that happened because of 911 was the sole basis of the story- there was no interesting writing or characters, and the author was showing off how much he new about Manhattan elitism. The whole guilty love thing might have worked besides the constant exclamations by the characters like, “Oh no, we’re in love but it happened because of 911! Do you feel guilty about it? I don’t.”
Feminism is for Everyone, by Bell Hooks. An informative book on the history of feminist movement, rather than a guide or introduction to feminism, which is what I thought it would be.
Lark and Termite, by Jayne Anne Philips- which was mediocre. I liked some of the language, but the heavy Faulkener influences were obvious and a little painful. I did like the first half!
