A law was recently passed in Ireland banning blasphemy. I want to make sure I do everything in my power just to let people know about this. This is a law enforcing the most basic censorship- a law that would have stopped the very beginnings of the United States of America. Under this law, any action or material that is offensive to a religious person is outlawed- not only making statements or writing books, but reading and owning them. I find this an offense against basic human rights and fear the spread of these types of laws.
I don’t think anyone should tell you what to read or think and Ireland’s government is doing just that. They are protecting the Church and religion just as feudalism did in the Middle Ages, despite the great leaps and bounds humankind has come in every way since. Scientific thought, or questioning your surroundings, is the reason behind our progress and forbidding the questioning of religion is a hindrance to us all.
